Subject: Request for comments on Exceptional Events Demonstration for High Ozone in the Sacramento Regional Nonattainment Area Due to Wildfires
On behalf of the Air Districts that comprise the Sacramento Federal Nonattainment Area (SFNA), the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District is requesting comments on the “Exceptional Events Demonstration for High Ozone in the Sacramento Regional Nonattainment Area Due to Wildfires.” This document describes the weather phenomena and wildfires that caused unusually high 1-hour ozone concentrations in the Sacramento Region on June 23, June 27, July 7, July 9, July 10, & July 25, 2008.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) rules, high pollution concentrations are not considered in an area’s attainment designation when the exceptional event causes the high ozone concentrations. The District in conjunction with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) analyses show that the wildfires caused the ozone episode, and plans to submit documents that satisfy USEPA rules.
A copy of the “Exceptional Events Demonstration for High Ozone in the Sacramento Regional Nonattainment Area Due to Wildfires” (PDF) will be available on the Air District Web site beginning July 29, 2009. Written comments are being received, and interested persons may submit comments to:
