Climate Pollution Reduction Grants Program

​The Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) program provides funding to states, local governments, tribes, and territories to develop and implement plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollution. The CPRG program is a two-phased grant program that provides funding of $250 million for noncompetitive planning grants and $4.6 billion for competitive implementation grants. Planning funds can be used to update existing climate, energy, or sustainability plans or to develop new plans.

As the regional air pollution control agency responsible for reducing air and climate pollution, the Sac Metro Air District is leading the climate planning process for the Sacramento region to guarantee the opportunity to compete for this new CPRG funding. The Sac Metro Air District is working with other regional leaders and partners to ensure that Sacramento's regional climate plan includes all desired climate pollution reduction strategies. Capital Region Climate Priorities Plan Available



On March 1, 2024, the Sac Metro Air District shared the Capital Region Climate Priorities Plan which serves as the CPRG Priority Climate Action Plan for the Sacramento region. The measures contained in the plan are eligible for implementation grant funding under the CPRG program. 


Notice of Funding Opportunity

EPA released a Notice of Funding Opportunity announcing a general competition for approximately $4.3 billion available in implementation grant funding. The general competition is for states, municipalities, tribes, and territories and is open now until April 1, 2024.

Past Events


On July 26, Sac Metro Air District hosted a webinar to share information about the CPRG program. As the lead agency for this regional climate pollution reduction grant opportunity, it is Sac Metro Air District's responsibility to coordinate with jurisdictional partners to not only develop an attainable vision for a low-carbon region, but also prepare for the second phase of this program, where a total of $4.6 billion in competitive grants will be available nationwide to implement greenhouse gas reduction measures from the Priority Climate Action Plan. Partner Support


To demonstrate the importance of regional collaboration, on November 9, 2023, more than 50 regional elected officials attended a joint meeting of the Boards of Directors for the Sac Metro Air District, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, the Sacramento Regional Transit District, and the Sacramento Area Council of Governments. During this meeting, executive approval was given to execute a joint resolution in support of continued collaboration on regional priority projects. 

On June 15, 2023, Congresswoman Doris Matsui issued a statement of support applauding Sac Metro Air District for leading the CPRG program on behalf of the seven-county Sacramento metro area. Click here to read why she commends the CPRG program and Sac Metro Air District as the lead agency.
