Public Records Request

The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (District) is committed to transparency and providing public access to government records in accordance with the California Public Records Act (Government Code section 7920.000 et seq.).

Members of the public may request copies of identifiable District records that are not otherwise exempt from disclosure under applicable law.

Before submitting a request, please review the information below to help ensure your request can be processed as efficiently as possible. 


Commonly Requested Information

The District frequently receives requests related to: 

  • Permitted facilities 

  • Permit applications and permitting activities 

  • Inspection and enforcement activities 

  • Notices of Violation (NOVs) and other compliance actions

  • Public complaints 

  • Asbestos demolition and renovation projects 

  • Board and administrative records 
  • Other District programs and activities 


Online Resources

Permit information and facility locations are currently available through the District's Permitted Facilities webpage. 

Additio​nal online public information resources are currently under development. 

Then the Submit section only contains the PRA form button. 

That separation will become important when you add the Public Data Access Portal. 


Before You Submit a Request 

Prov​​iding detailed information helps District staff locate information more efficiently and may reduce the need for follow-up clarification. 

When available, please include: Facility name 

  • Facility ID number or Organization ID 
  • Business name 
  • Street address 
  • Permit number 
  • Complaint number 
  • Violation number 
  • Asbestos project number 
  • Relevant date range 
  • Type of record being requested 

The more specific your request, the easier it will be for District staff to identify responsive records.

What happens after I submit a Public Records Request?​Under the California Public Records Act, the District has ten calendar days from receipt of a request to determine whether responsive records exist and notify the requester of that determination. If additional clarification is needed, District staff may contact you during the review process. Responsive records will be provided as soon as practicable following review and collection. ​​<br>

Requests related to specific facilities are among the most common requests received by the District. Providing a facility name, facility ID number, address, or permit number can help staff locate responsive records more quickly. The District regularly receives requests related to public complaints and complaint investigations. Providing an address, project information, complaint number, or date range can help staff identify responsive records. Complaintant information is anonymous and will be redacted from documents. ​<br>

The District receives requests related to asbestos demolition and renovation projects. These records consist of asbestos notifications, which may include asbestos surveys. District staff can answer questions about the public records process and help identify existing records that may be responsive to your request. However, the Act does not require agencies to create new records, conduct research, perform analyses, or prepare reports that do not already exist.​<br>
